What are the Different Types of Ginseng? Ginseng Benefits and Side Effects

Each different type of ginseng are powerful and offer multiple health benefits as their effects have numerous uses.

ginseng benefits and side effects

Nutritional supplements are very misunderstood and sometimes get a bad rap because people either take the wrong supplements or the wrong amounts necessary to get results. Everyone has heard of ginseng, and most people associate it with energy which is not why I take it or why anyone else should take it in my opinion. Companies that add it to their products for energy do so playing on the ignorance of consumers knowing full well that you can take ginseng before bed without any problems. So what are the different types of ginseng and how can ginseng benefit your life?

Different Types of Ginseng

There three main different types of ginseng are Oriental, Siberian, and American.

Oriental Ginseng (Panax)

  • This type of ginseng has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. Panax ginsengs are adaptogenic herbs which help decrease sensitivity to stress. They are identified by the amount of the active chemical ginsenoside that they contain. Ginsenoside content varies on species, location of which it was grown, and the time it took to grow before harvest. They also have a fleshy root.

American Ginseng

  • The forked root and leaves of American ginseng were used traditionally by the Native Americans as medicine. This type of ginseng was very widespread among New York, Pennsylvania, and Ontario but due to over-harvesting and destruction to its habitat it is now very rare in these areas. American ginseng, like Panax ginseng, is also identified by ginsenosides.

Siberian Ginseng

  • Siberian ginseng is truly an adaptogenic herb as well because it is related to Panax but the difference between these ginsengs is that Siberian ginseng contains eleutherosides, not ginsenoside. This type of ginseng has a woody root.

Ginseng and Blood Pressure

  • Unlike stimulants we take for energy that raise our blood pressure, ginseng actually does the opposite and lowers blood pressure. This study shows that ginseng does indeed lower blood pressure, not as much as prescription medicine, but it does indeed help nonetheless.
  • Many people have high blood pressure because of their lifestyle choices and are unaware of it. High blood pressure is known as the silent killer because it’s effects are not felt on a daily basis like one may expect. There are many complications that arise from high blood pressure such as kidney failure which occurs when high blood pressure slowly degrades the filtering mechanism of the kidneys until someone needs a transplant or dies.
  • Taking ginseng in concert with prescription drugs is an option to talk about with your doctor to reduce your dependence on synthetic drugs which carry their own side effects.

Ginseng Improving Blood Flow

  • Increased blood blow means that the necessary oxygen is carried to the cells throughout the body in an efficient manner. This can have a multitude of effects including ginseng benefits for women who often have circulation issues in their legs or by helping people’s brains function better by allowing neurons to run more efficiently.
  • Having better blood circulation means better health and physical performance that any one would be interested in. Many companies ignorantly add ginseng into brain boosting nootropic stacks in hopes of helping focus and concentration. Since ginseng improves blood flow it can help abstract thought but it does not help focus and concentration as much as coffee or a strong focusing agent like Addrena. Powerful natural and herbal Adderall alternatives like Addrena understand that ginseng is actually effective at increasing abstract thought as opposed to mental alertness which is why Addrena does not contain any ginseng.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

  • Many people know that Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra work by lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow to the penis. For this same reason, but to a lesser effect, ginseng can have health benefits for men in this way because it naturally works by a similar function of both increasing blood flow and lowering blood pressure.
  • ED can often times be apparent because of other maladies like low blood pressure and circulation problems which can effect our every day lives and overall life span. By supplementing with ginseng we can achieve noticeable effects while also increasing our overall health levels.

Other uses of Ginseng

Ginseng also has many other benefits but not all have conclusive evidence behind them.
  • Improve mood
  • Endurance
  • Heart disease
  • Fatigue
  • Hepatitis C
  • Diabetes

Ginseng Side Effects

Ginseng has some of the least side effects of any nutritional supplement that you can buy. The side effects that are listed are agitation, diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, and nervousness. I have never experienced anything even close to a side effect from ginseng which is why I recommend people consider making it part of their nutritional supplement regimen.

Forms of Ginseng

forms of ginseng
  • Tablets and Capsules

Ginseng pills will have a similar effect whether it is a tablet or a capsule. Both should be taken with a food and a whole glass of water.

  • Liquid

The liquid bottle ginseng dosage comes as 10ml and contain 6000mg per bottle. They do not taste that great but are the most effective from what I have tried. I will add though that I tend to take the most amount of MGs when I take these as 1ml of fluid is a very small amount and I have never experienced any noticeable side effects when going over the 500mg amount that is suggested.

  • Tea

Ginseng tea is used to help boost immune system as well as improve digestion, stabilize blood sugar, and as a remedy for menstrual cramps. Always look for teas with 3-7% ginsenosides as more of them will determine the strength of the ginseng.

These different types of ginseng are a great herb to take because it is effective at lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow to different parts of our body which in turn helps us in many ways. Always use caution when consuming any type of supplement. It is important to remember that we all have our own bio-chemical individuality, which means that we all respond differently to supplements, foods, drugs, and most anything else like sunlight for example. If you ever develop a rash, hives, swelling, difficult breathing, or itching that could be a sign that you are having an allergic reaction and should take an OTC product like Benadryl or consult a professional right away.

Best Vitamins and Herbs for ADD/ADHD: OTC Natural Adderall Alternatives

Many people are unaware that there are over the counter alternatives to Adderall containing vitamins and natural herbal substitute supplements for ADD.

vitamins and herbs for ADD: alternative to Adderall

Below average levels of neurotransmitters in the brain is how ADD/ADHD is thought to occur. These neurotransmitters are what your brain uses for cognitive functions like concentration that play a role in ADD and ADHD. Usually doctors would prescribe drugs like Adderall or Ritalin which are stimulants that help raise these neurotransmitters in the brain, however these vitamins and herbs for Attention Deficit Disorder and OTC supplements like Adderall can help these symptoms in a safe and more natural way.

Choline is a vitamin for ADD and over the counter Adderall substitute that is a water soluble B-Vitamin that must be consumed in order for our bodies to remain healthy because it is an essential nutrient. It is an important vitamin for ADD because it is the precursor needed to produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is involved in the functioning of the brain. Since choline plays a role in producing and releasing acetylcholine, it is considered cholinergic. It is also used as a nootropic or ‘smart drug’ because of the various cognitive enhancing functions that acetylcholine has on the brain.

Natural Foods that Work Like Adderall as a Vitamin for ADD: Choline

As we become older our body’s natural output of choline declines and it’s effect of the nervous system weakens. To improve brain power and increase mental focus, we can eat food containing choline to increase the production of acetylcholine.
  • Cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and broccoli.
  • Eggs specifically egg yolk
  • Soybeans
  • Peanuts
  • Black beans and kidney beans

Along with brain boosting effects, foods containing choline also have numerous health benefits

  • Allows cell membranes to keep functioning properly
  • Allows nerve communication with muscles
  • Prevents the build up of a harmful compound in the blood called homocysteine which is associated with osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease

Herbs for ADD

Huperzine is an herb for Attention Deficit Disorder used for memory support and has been shown to be effective for improving cognitive function. It has also been shown to decrease the cholinesterase enzyme in your brain which prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine. When cholinesterase is inhibited, neurotransmitters like acetylcholine in your brain are increased.

Vinpocetine is another herb for ADD that is from the periwinkle plant. It has been known to enhance blood flow to the brain. In Eastern Europe it is even used as a drug to help treat memory impairment. Since vinpocetine is a powerful anti-inflammatory, it may play a role in the treatment of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease (source wiki).

Guarana is an effective stimulant that actually contains three different stimulants including caffeine, theophylline and theobromine. These herbal stimulants have effects on cognition including memory, mood, and alertness. Guarana contains good fatty acids that releases Guarana and make it gradually increase in your body over time, unlike caffeine where it hits you immediately and makes you feel jittery. The reason why it is the best herb for ADD is because it is cholinergic and releases the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
The vitamin and herbs for ADD mentioned above are also found in this natural alternative to Adderall as an herbal stimulant energy and focus booster named Addrena. Addrena helps symptoms of inattention because it enhances cognition, provides long lasting energy, and increases mental focus. These vitamins and herbs for ADD are herbal stimulants and nootropics that work in a synergistic manner increasing the effectiveness of one another.
Natural Alternatives to Adderall are an excellent way to speed : Addrena Review
Vitamins and herbs for ADD are an underused resource; There is virtually an herb that helps or cures any ailment out there today so it makes sense that an over the counter natural Adderall alternative can help increase mental focus because of their well known effects and safety. If you feel you have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder it is important to discuss this with your doctor and take their advice.
