Nutritional supplements are very misunderstood and sometimes get a bad rap because people either take the wrong supplements or the wrong amounts necessary to get results. Everyone has heard of ginseng, and most people associate it with energy which is not why I take it or why anyone else should take it in my opinion. Companies that add it to their products for energy do so playing on the ignorance of consumers knowing full well that you can take ginseng before bed without any problems. So what are the different types of ginseng and how can ginseng benefit your life?
Different Types of Ginseng
There three main different types of ginseng are Oriental, Siberian, and American.
Oriental Ginseng (Panax)
- This type of ginseng has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. Panax ginsengs are adaptogenic herbs which help decrease sensitivity to stress. They are identified by the amount of the active chemical ginsenoside that they contain. Ginsenoside content varies on species, location of which it was grown, and the time it took to grow before harvest. They also have a fleshy root.
- The forked root and leaves of American ginseng were used traditionally by the Native Americans as medicine. This type of ginseng was very widespread among New York, Pennsylvania, and Ontario but due to over-harvesting and destruction to its habitat it is now very rare in these areas. American ginseng, like Panax ginseng, is also identified by ginsenosides.
- Siberian ginseng is truly an adaptogenic herb as well because it is related to Panax but the difference between these ginsengs is that Siberian ginseng contains eleutherosides, not ginsenoside. This type of ginseng has a woody root.

Ginseng and Blood Pressure
- Unlike stimulants we take for energy that raise our blood pressure, ginseng actually does the opposite and lowers blood pressure. This study shows that ginseng does indeed lower blood pressure, not as much as prescription medicine, but it does indeed help nonetheless.
- Many people have high blood pressure because of their lifestyle choices and are unaware of it. High blood pressure is known as the silent killer because it’s effects are not felt on a daily basis like one may expect. There are many complications that arise from high blood pressure such as kidney failure which occurs when high blood pressure slowly degrades the filtering mechanism of the kidneys until someone needs a transplant or dies.

Ginseng Side Effects
Ginseng has some of the least side effects of any nutritional supplement that you can buy. The side effects that are listed are agitation, diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, and nervousness. I have never experienced anything even close to a side effect from ginseng which is why I recommend people consider making it part of their nutritional supplement regimen.
Forms of Ginseng
Tablets and Capsules
Ginseng pills will have a similar effect whether it is a tablet or a capsule. Both should be taken with a food and a whole glass of water.
The liquid bottle ginseng dosage comes as 10ml and contain 6000mg per bottle. They do not taste that great but are the most effective from what I have tried. I will add though that I tend to take the most amount of MGs when I take these as 1ml of fluid is a very small amount and I have never experienced any noticeable side effects when going over the 500mg amount that is suggested.
TeaGinseng tea is used to help boost immune system as well as improve digestion, stabilize blood sugar, and as a remedy for menstrual cramps. Always look for teas with 3-7% ginsenosides as more of them will determine the strength of the ginseng.
